KALPETTA:  An expert team from Thiruvananthapuram comprising Dr K Sukumaran, state epidemiologist, and Dr K Raghavan, deputy director, Directorate of Health Services, visited the areas where cholera outbreak was reported in the district on Wednesday.
The experts interacted with the district health programme officers and visited the Karimam colony, Pulppalli, and Manikuni colony, Sulthan Bathery. They also visited the patients admitted in various hospitals. The team suspects that the disease entered the district through migrant labourers who had been working in the ginger farms of Hassan and Courg districts of Karnataka. The disease spread from these labourers to their relatives.

Dr K Ajayan, district surveillance officer, accompanied the team. Dr Thomas Mathew, chief, Community Medicine, MCH, Thiruvananthapuram, would visit the district on Thursday.

Using boiled water, consuming hot food and keeping the surroundings clean, would help check the spread of the disease, the release said.

The Union government should take steps to send a medical team from the Union Health Ministry to the district, M I Shanawas M P said here in a press release.
