CHENNAI: The city’s first tryst with a massive fog formation in 2012, left most people surprised.  It was particularly quaint for early morning commuters from Arakkonam and Chengalpet who found the city shrouded in white as their EMUs chugged into Chennai. “I’ve never seen it get this thick,” said Praveen Raj, a student who commutes from Arakkonam, early every morning. While people near the fishing harbour did have some cloud cover, the sun broke through along the coast only around 8 am and sales were delayed, but not disrupted. A fisherwoman said that she missed her sales with her regular customers.IT and BPO workers said that they had trouble spotting their white company buses, “Thankfully they didn’t speed too much due to bad visibility along OMR,” said Saritha, a CTS staff.Meanwhile, motorists said that they had to slow down because of the low visibility. CCTP also reported that the number of minor mishaps recorded were not too many above the average. Facebook and Twitter were abuzz with the engulfing fog - some awry with humour “Fog in Chennai? Next thing we know there’ll be polar bears in Marina. Global Warming”.A spokesperson with the Meteorological Centre here said that this sort of dense fog might happen once or twice during the post-winter season due to nocturnal radiation. A relatively higher humidity and moisture-laden air are also probable causes that were given.
