As part of the Prison Department’s welfare programme coin telephone booths will be set up at all the sub jails in the district soon. The prisoners will be allowed to make a call to two numbers once in a week using the coins, as per certain guidelines.
According to Director-General of Prison Department Alexander Jacob, the telephone facility has already come into being at central jails and some of the district jails. “Now we have decided to extend this project to all the jails in the state. The jail inmates can make calls to two numbers - their family and the counsel. Each inmate will be permitted to talk to these persons twice a week. The coins for this will either be provided by the family members or given as remuneration to the inmates for engaging in different works in the jail,” Alexander Jacob said.
In Ernakulam district this facility will be introduced at sub jails in Ernakulam, Mattancherry, Aluva and Muvattupuzha. However, the telephone booths will be alloted in Ernakulam sub jail only after several inquiries. “Since we only have terror accused inmates here, the telephone booth would have to be implemented after several rounds of inquiry. There was a case where one of the terror accused had made an international call from the jail.
In the wake of such possibility, the DGP has given directives that the project can be implemented only after consulting the police and intelligence wing who are looking into the security related to the terror accused admitted here. We have to ensure that the accused persons do not misuse such a facility,” S Raju, Superintendent of Ernakulam Sub Jail said.
