Congress revamp runs into trouble again

Fuelling speculation once again and putting the organisational revamp in the state Congress in a spot, the clash of interests of various groups has come to the fore through a last-minute change of plans of Chief Minister Oommen Chandy.

He had cancelled his New Delhi trip on Sunday, dashing hopes of a smooth transition in the KPCC and DCCs.

The failure of the prominent ‘I’ and ‘A’ groups to come to an understanding in the sharing of DCC presidentship posts has resulted in the plans for compromise going awry, it is learnt.

Even as the complaint of leaders like V M Sudheeran and K Muraleedharan about lack of consultations before picking up the candidates was not addressed effectively, the Chandy-Ramesh Chennithala combine was all set to take a tentative list of office-bearers for the approval of the Congress central leadership.

However, the central leadership has now placed the onus on the state Congress itself, reportedly reiterating that the list should come from the grassroots level itself and could not be imposed from New Delhi.

Though determined to take control of seven DCCs each, the ‘A’ and ‘I’ groups stumbled when the former group reportedly insisted that either Ernakulam or Kannur should be given to it.

But the ‘I’ group was unwilling to part with its claimed strongholds and suggested Kollam instead, which had not found favour with ‘A’ group so far.

Chandy was supposed to fly to New Delhi via Mumbai on Sunday but his plans were put on hold abruptly.

However, KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala had left for New Delhi with his family.

He had held informal consultations with some leaders.

The Chief Minister maintained that there was nothing unofficial in putting off his New Delhi trip. ‘’There is no dispute over the organisational revamp. There will not be much delay. It will be finalised soon,’’ he said.
