KOCHI: As many as 7,000 local body members of the Indian National Congress will join together here on April 21 for a ‘Mahapanchayat’, which would be the first-of-its-kind in the state. The ‘Mahapanchayat’, organised by the KPCC, would be inaugurated by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, said KPCC general secretary in charge of local bodies N Venugopal.“The ‘Mahapanchayat’ is the first-of-its-kind where all the local body members will come together. No other party has ever organised such a meet”, he said, adding that such an event had not been conducted in the history of the state.The ‘Mahapanchayat’ will create awareness among the members on development issues. The members would be made aware of various Plan funds and Central funds and on how to utilise them, Venugopal said.Pointing out that a single day meet was not enough for discussions, he said that it was only because of accommodation issues of the delegates that the meet had to be restricted to a single day. Union Minister of State for Consumer Affairs K V Thomas will inaugurate the seminar on ‘Development Activities of Local bodies and Plan Fund’. Planning Board vice-chairman K M Chandrasekhar and Planning Board members C P John and G Vijayaraghavan will speak at the seminar.Union Minister for Corporate Affairs Veerappa Moily will inaugurate the second seminar on ‘Central Funds and Local Bodies’.
