Congress understands Telangana wish: AICC

The Congress high command understands the aspirations of the people of Telangana region, AICC spokesman Manish Tiwari has said.

Talking to reporters in Delhi on Monday, he, however, said that it was not easy to find a solution to the contentious issue.

But the Centre was holding negotiations with all political parties and people’s organisations to find a solution and arrive at a consensus, he said. He appealed to the people of the three regions to exercise restraint on the issue.

Party MLC Ponguleti Sudhakar Reddy, who was in Delhi on Monday to take part in a convention of leaders of the NSUI and Youth Congress, met AICC chief Sonia Gandhi and submitted a report on the Telangana March.

“I have requested madam Sonia Gandhi to accord statehood to the Telangana region at the earliest. She told me that she was examining all the issues concerning the state,” he said.

Eluru MP Kavuri Sambasiva Rao dismissed as baseless the contention that the turnout of people at Necklace Road was an expression of Telangana sentiment.

Rao said he was not against state’s bifurcation per se but said it had to be done in a scientific manner. “Let them say on what basis they want division of the state. Is it on the ground that their region is backward or is it because it is more populous or is it because the people right down in their hearts want separation?” he asked.

He, however, made it clear that whatever basis was taken for division of the state it should stand to test of scrutiny and should be applicable to other states where demands for divisions were heard often.

Minister for minor irrigation TG Venkatesh said the Congress high command would take a final decision on Telangana only six months prior to the 2014 polls.

Congress legislators from the Rayalaseema region would visit Delhi on October 3 to know what exactly was happening in Delhi over the issue of bifurcation, he said.

Telangana Congress MPs Manda Jagannadham and Gutta Sukhender Reddy alleged that Seemandhra MPs Kavuri Sambasiva Rao, Rayapati Sambasiva Rao and Lagadapati Rajagopal were coming in the way of Telangana getting statehood only to protect their business interests in the region

T Cong MP Complains to Sonia against Kiran

HYDERABAD: Raising a banner of revolt against chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy, Peddapalli MP G Vivekanand on Monday wrote to AICC president Sonia Gandhi, saying that Kiran Reddy would lead the Congress to a disaster if he did not change his style of functioning.

“The state government is being run on the whims and fancies of Kiran Kumar Reddy. The chief minister is encouraging groups and sub-groups within the party in all districts. The party’s vote percentage has come down from 34 to 19 per cent since Kiran Reddy was appointed the chief minister. During his regime, bypolls were held for 52 Assembly seats and the Congress lost as many as 50.”

The MP informed Sonia Gandhi that the Telangana March was a success despite the government illegally detaining activists and creating hurdles in their path.

“Though we staged a sit-in in front of his camp office twice, Kiran Reddy refused to meet us,” the MP said

Mahashweta Devi Backs movement

HYDERABAD: Renowned Bengali writer and social activist Mahashweta Devi has lent support to the demand for a separate Telangana state.

Speaking at an interactive session conducted by the Centre for Dalit and Adivasi Studies and the Translation School of Humanities at the University of Hyderabad here on Monday, the Jnanpith and Magsaysay awardee claimed to be a great supporter of the movement which she termed as one for independence and democracy.

“I support all movements of Dalits and Adivasis against inequality and discrimination in all spheres of public and private sectors,” she said.
