Coup attempt in Maldives, president resigns

Male: The Maldives is undergoing a coup attempt led by Opposition demonstrators and rogue elements of the police.

According to reports, the demonstrators have taken over the state broadcaster.

Mohammed Nasheed, the first democratically elected president of Maldives, has also resigned following ultimatums from the Opposition.

He won the elections in 2008 following 30 years of dictatorship in the island nation.

President Nasheed, however, remains in control of the army.
