Biswas underwent surgery after he was admitted at a private nursing home in Kolkata. His condition is not very stable as he was also suffering from kidney ailments.
Party sources said the condition of Biswas remained critical and the doctors conducted a CT scan and have kept him under observation for 72 hours in the ICU of a city nursing home.
The CPI-M West Bengal state committee held an emergency meeting on Sunday morning to review the situation arising out of the critical condition of the party' state secretary Anil Biswas who underwent a brain surgery after suffering a cerebral attack last night.
Veteran marxist Jyoti Basu, Chief Minister Buddhadev Bhattacharya and senior party leaders attended the meeting cancelling all their poll related programmes.
The meeting was believed to have discussed who would be the in-charge of party's state leadership in view of Biswas' illness. The five-phase assembly election will be held in the state in April and May.
According to informed sources, CPI-M Politburo members Sitaram Yechuri and Brinda Karat would be arriving later on Sunday to visit the ailing leader.
Emerging out of the meeting, Basu said that Biswas was not well.
He said the doctors conducted a scan and would soon issue a medical bulletin on his condition.
The 61-year old Biswas, who was scheduled to leave for Malda to attend a party meeting on Saturday night, felt uneasy in his residence and was rushed to the nursing home.
Meanwhile, Politburo member Biman Bose said that Biswas' condition, though critical, was stable.
Bose said that doctors had conducted a CT scan and removed a blood clot during a surgery which was successful.
He said that Bose was pre-occupied with party work and attended many meetings on Saturday and he was scheduled to leave for Malda to attend an election meeting late on Saturday night.
But he felt uneasy at his residence and doctors found his blood pressure very high.
He was immediately removed to a city nursing home adding the doctors were doing their best so that he could recover soon.
To a question Bose said that Biswas' scheduled political programmes would be shared by other party leaders.
Nursing home authorities in a statement said that a medical board has been constituted for the treatment of Anil Biswas who is now in the ICCU.
The seven-member board is headed by Dr RN Roy.
The statement, issued by nursing home's Chief Executive Officer Sumedha Sen, said Biswas had been admitted on Saturday with a massive brain haemorrhage and subsequently underwent an emergency brain operation to remove the clot.
He has been kept on a 'lifecare support system' from the time of admission.
The board members reviewed his condition during the day and recommended a CT scan which was subsequently done.
His condition remained critical but stable, the statement said.
