KOCHI: Stating that it had always favoured reservation for the economically backward people among the forward communities, the CPM on Friday dared the Nair Service Society (NSS) to influence the Congress-led state and Central governments to bring about a piece of legislation in this regard. “Instead of asking the state and the Central governments to bring in a piece of legislation, they are now trying to set up a corporation for the forward community, which is not going to have any relevance,” CPM politburo member Kodiyeri Balakrishnan said while inaugurating the party’s Ernakulam district conference at Paravoor.Alleging that the NSS has given up its slogan of reservation for the Congress, he said the forward community corporation as envisaged by it is not going to benefit them. Finance Minister K M Mani has said that there would not be any financial assistance to the corporation. Pointing out that the party welcomed the Ranganath Mishra Commission Report which had advocated reservation for Muslims, Kodiyeri asked if the Congress was ready to bring in a piece of legislation in this regard. KOCHI METRO RAILLashing out at the government’s decision to go in for global tender for the Kochi Metro Rail, Kodiyeri said it would lead to a major scam. “The Congress thinks that if the work is entrusted with the DMRC, it would not be able to allot the work to the persons they like,” he said.“It was during the term of the LDF government that the decision to implement the Kochi Metro Rail was taken. If the Centre had given the approval then, the work would have been completed at a cost of `2,000 crore. And now the project cost is estimated at more than ` 5,000 crore,” he said.
