Fire crackers worth Rs 5 lakh stocked illegally was seized from a house and two persons were arrested under the Explosive Substance Act here on Wednesday. Acting on a tip-off, the Gandhi Market police conducted a raid at the house of R Sankar (32) of Tharanallur here.
The police found 90 boxes of fire crackers in the house. Subsequently, the police arrested Sankar and M Mahalaingam (48), the driver of Anna Nagar in EB Road.
They were booked under IPC section 286 (Negligence in handling explosive substance) and Section 9(b) of Explosives Substance Act. They were later arrested.
Similarly, the City police, seized crackers worth Rs 1.50 lakh in Srirangam for illegally hoarding fire crackers. A case was registered against two persons including Ram Kumar and Prakash.
However, the police arrested Prakash. A manhunt is on for Ram Kumar who has been absconding.
