A wanted criminal, carrying a cash reward of Rs 1 lakh on his head, has been acquitted by a local court in a six-year-old murder case due to lack of evidence, sources said on Saturday.

Additional District Sessions Judge Lokender Rathi acquitted Bhupender Bafer in the Jitender Rathi murder case after all the eyewitnesses turned hostile. According to prosecutor Anjum Khan, Jitender Rathi was shot dead in Jansath area in Muzaffarnagar on January 30, 2007.

Police had named Bhupender Bafer, Ajit, and Rambir as accused in the case. The two other accused- Ajit and Rambir- were killed in a police encounter in Roorki earlier.
