SALEM: In a family dispute over property, an 80-year-old man beat his son to death on Wednesday night near Valapadi. According to the police, the victim, Barathy Ganesan (55) — a farmer and former Panchayat President of Muthampatti — had allegedly usurped 20 acres of land belonging to his brother Kandasamy, who passed away last year following an illness. Ganesan allegedly conspired with his sister, Madhammal, and gave Kandasamy’s wife Rs 11 lakh as final settlement for the land owned by the brother.Ganesan’s father, Karuppanna Gounder, was opposed to this settlement and had been demanding a share. Since then, Ganesan allegedly harassed his father by isolating him, putting him in a room, and not feeding him well. Gounder became depressed and his condition deteriorated steadily, according to the police. On Wednesday night at about 10.30 pm, Karupanna Gounder managed to escape from his room and went to the verandah where Ganesan and his family were sleeping. He took a 2.5-feet-long iron rod, weighing about five kg, and hit Ganesan on his head. Ganesan died on the spot.Ganesan’s wife Chellammal and mother Nallammal tried to revive him but in vain. The deceased’s children Barathy (31) and Senthil (28) informed the Valapadi police about the incident. After a preliminary inquiry the police arrested Gounder. He was booked under section 302 and remanded into custody on Thursday.
