New Delhi: There is no denying the fact that one's good conduct pays in the long run and that is what is exactly being experienced by Tihar Jail prisoners, some of whom have been given a chance to interact with the public. Located on the Jail Road in west Delhi 'Tihar Food Court' is a new food joint, a rehabilitation effort initiated by the jail authorities.
Having a capacity for 40 people, the restaurant is managed by Tihar inmates under the vigil of jail warden Kishan Singh Bisht. "The food is prepared and served by the inmates who are in semi open jail now " says Bisht.
The menu ranges from mouth-watering snacks to thali with the price range being from Rs 10 to Rs 150. The restaurant serves pure vegetarian food with a focus on quality and cleanliness.
"As the kitchen is not big, the food is prepared at Central Jail No 2 and is brought here. But snacks can be prepares here easily," says Mohammad Asin, one of the inmates who is working at the restaurant.
All the inmates are professionally trained to serve the public. "All of them have done hotel management course," added Bisht. This becomes evident by their behaviour and their manner of serving.
The restaurant has no woman inmates and others who are working have completed 12 years in prison. "On the basis of their conduct, they are being sent out of the jail," says Bisht.
The restaurant opens at 11 AM and closes at 10 PM and it maintains a register too.
"It feel so good when we talk to people. We have spent a lot of time in the jail," said Asin. Inmates work for 11 hours at a salary of Rs 74 per day.
Even though the restaurant opened two months ago, it is gaining popularity and organizes birthday parties as well.
But the restaurant faces two major problems which is becoming hindrance in its popularity. "There is no door and it becomes difficult to locate it. Secondly, there is no parking facility due to which people don't come," said Dost Mohammad, another inmate working at the restaurant.
