PANUR(THALASSERY): Tension prevails in the sensitive Panur region here after the police demolished a waiting shelter built at Thangalpeedika in memory of the late Yuva Morcha leader K T Jayakrishnan.A hartal was observed in Panur on Thursday in protest against the police action.Schools, offices and commercial establishments in the area remained closed following the hartal. Traffic on the Panur-Koothuparamba road was also hit.The dismantled waiting shelter was rebuilt by the BJP and Yuva Morcha workers even as the police kept vigil in the area. The shelter located near the house of Jayakrishnan was demolished by the police on Wednesday night. Yuva Morcha leader K T Jayakrishnan, who was working as a teacher at the Mokeri School, was stabbed to death by a group of CPM workers in a class room on December 1, 1999. The CPM workers accused in the case, except one, were released by the Supreme Court marking the culmination of a prolonged legal battle.The BJP and the Yuva Morcha have been observing the death anniversary of Jayakrishnan as ‘Balidan day’ since the brutal murder of the young leader. This year the Balidan day is scheduled to take place at Panur on December 1. Senior leaders of the BJP are expected to address the programmes here on the Balidan day, according to BJP workers.
