While most of these girl students have since been discharged, some other patients were provided treatment at nearby health centres, he said.The infection broke out in the last week of July in the 300-seat hostel apparently due to lack of safe drinking water, said District Welfare Officer Paramananda Prusty.The residential ashram school has one bore-well which meets the water requirement of all the inmates. Besides, arrangement of pipe water supply to the school has been made by the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation.Prusty said as the bore-well had become defunct two weeks back, students had to depend upon the contaminated pipe water. As a result, many of them were affected by diarrhoea.Collector B S Punia, Chief District Medical Officer N C Behera and other officials have visited the affected hostel and took stock of the situation.
