DLF mishap is not first of its kind: Nayak

BANGALORE: Reacting to Thursday’s mishap wherein five labourers were killed at an under-construction site, Chairman of Karnataka State Human Rights Commission (KSHRC) Justice S R Nayak said a monitoring team needed to be set up to prevent such incidents.“Government has to form a strong monitoring team to put a check on all such happenings and provide a sense of safety to the labourers,” he said after visiting the spot on Friday.Four labourers had died on the spot and one succumbed while he was being taken to hospital after a portion of crane came down crashing at DLF Westend Heights New Town project site in Akshay Nagar, Begur, on Thursday night. Nayak recalled a similar accident that had happened a few years ago. He said an underconstruction building of the Prestige group had collapsed in Whitefield, killing two and injuring several others.Nayak said many huge apartments were coming up in and around Bangalore but not enough measures were being taken to ensure the labourers’ safety. Shifting his attention to Thursday’s accident, he said the KSHRC would go through the police report to learn what are the charges mentioned in it. He said strict action would be taken against those who are at fault.Rs 50k for Family of DeceasedLabour Minister B N Bachegowda on Friday announced a compensation of Rs 50,000 for families of each of the deceased. Those who were injured would get Rs 25,000.The minister said the government was extending the compensation on humanitarian grounds. He said had the labourers got themselves registered with the Labour Department, the families of each of them would have got Rs 5 lakh after their death. He said as the labourers were not registered, the government was not liable to pay the compensation but was still doing it on humanitarian grounds.He too said strict action would be taken against those who are responsible for the mishap.‘Survivor severely injured’Praveen Bhosle, who was admitted to a city hospital on Thursday with multiple injuries after the accident, underwent a major operation on Friday.Dr Pradip Kocheeppan, Consultant Orthopedic Surgeon, Fortis Hospital, said Bhosle’s thigh bones and leg bones were operated upon on Friday. He said the bones were severely damaged. He added that his hands and lungs too are injured and he needed another two big operations.The doctor informed that these two surgeries could not be done immediately as Bhosle needed to be in a stable condition for that.Work suspended, protest stagedA day after the accident that claimed lives of five labourers, work was suspended at the mishap site to condole the deaths. Meanwhile, members of Karnataka Rajya Karmikara Hitaraksha Trust (Workers’ Rights Protection Trust) staged a protest at the construction site.
