Dr P Moorthy, Head of the Department of the paediatric cardiothoracic surgery at the ICH, along with a team of able doctors performed the procedure to close the extra chamber.“At first, we did not know what the real problem was. On using the latest ECHO machine available at our hospital, we were able to diagnose that he had this rare defect, and were thus able to fix it,” he told reporters, adding the rare congenital defect occurs in less than 0.1% of all births.Another success story from ICH is Shajitha from Salem. The eight-year-old had excruciating pain in her legs for nearly an year, before doctors at the Government Hospitals in Salem and Tiruchy diagnosed the problem. “The child had a block in the aorta, due to which her legs were not being supplied with blood. We removed the troublesome 5cm part of the blood vessel and rejoined it,” said Dr Moorthy.Dean of Madras Medical College, Dr V Kanagasabai, said that these successes were possible as the Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa had ordered that the nstitute for Child Health and Hospital for Children  be made into a centre of excellence.
