THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Move over singers, dancers, actors. Move in hospitals. The reality show platform in Kerala, which in a revolutionary move gave space to panchayats to showcase their achievements last year, is now moving on to a social reality show for government-run hospitals in the state. The social reality show on health, Arogyatharakam, conceived by the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) in collaboration with the Centre for Digital Imaging Technology (C-Dit), will go on air in a couple of months. The programme will be telecast on Doordarshan Malayalam Channel. The first-of-its-kind involving public health and development in the country, this unique programme aims to select the best health institution with remarkable initiatives in implementing successful and sustainable health programmes. “All government-run hospitals and health institutions, right from general hospitals and district hospitals to primary health centres and community health centres will be taking part in the programme. They will be initially given a questionnaire, on the basis of which they will be short-listed. Public opinion regarding their services and quality of treatment will also be taken into account,” said NRHM state mission director Saurabh Jain. The programme will have 50 episodes of 25 minutes duration, the responsibility of production of which is totally with the C-Dit.“We are also planning an academic study on the institutional service delivery systems of these public health institutions along with the reality show. This would give an insight on the impact, into how useful these institutions have been and also on the changes required in the system,” said C-Dit deputy director Mohan Kumar.Though the structure of each episode is till fluid and yet to be finalised, there will be multiple segments. “While the hospitals are given a chance to explain their services, a jury will visit these hospitals and between the two, we plan to hold medical camps to get a response of the people. There will be some kind of a star-rating too,” said Mohan Kumar.Phone-in conversations, interaction with doctors, capsules on health history of Kerala and little snippets on prominent personalities in health sector will spice up the unique reality show.
