THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The district police have pressed the panic button following the brutal killing of two persons, including a notorious criminal the other day outside the city. The crime has led to anxiety over whether gangs are mushrooming again in the capital after a brief lull of about two years.Following this, the police have brought all men included in the goonda list under their scanner. The movements of all criminals, whose names are on the list of goondas, are being watched closely. The police have also submitted a list of names of those men who have to be detained invoking the Goonda Act, to the District Collector.Gangland murders were a frequent occurrence in the capital until a few years ago. Many notorious gang leaders had fallen prey to the rivalry that existed between the gangs. The murders of gang leaders Mottammoodu Shaji, who was slaughtered in his house at Mottammoodu near Nemom in 2007; Aprani Krishnakumar, executed on Kovalam-Chackai bypass road, also in the same year; Althara Bineesh, hacked to death at Vellayambalam, not far away from the Police Headquarters in 2009; V Vishnu, a CPM man murdered at Kaithamukku in 2009 and the consequent murder of Renjith, an RSS member at Mannanthala, were all the handiwork of rival gang members. However, such killings did not last long as the police could curb the menace of criminal gangs with the effective implementation of Prevention of Goonda Act. Many notorious goondas could be detained under the Act, which helped to reduce the crime rate in the district. It is this peaceful state of affairs that has been threatened following the twin murder that took place at Aramkal on Wednesday night. Now, one more name, that of Syam, who had undergone detention under the Goonda Act, has been added to the above list. But the police have dismissed the possibility of such a gang rivalry behind the twin murder of Syam and Praveen. The investigating officers still stand by their initial stand that a dispute sparked off over the sale of a bike had led to the murder.Meanwhile, it is also learned that the prime accused in the case, Prasanth, is suspected to have landed in the custody of the police. But the police are yet to register the arrest. Rather, they maintained that all the accused were still missing.
