HYDERABAD: Prominent Telangana leader and former PCC president D Srinivas seems to be playing a key role in the Delhi deliberations with an eye on his political future. The Election Commission issued a notification for election to fill the Legislative Council seat vacated by former chief minister K Rosaiah following his appointment as governor of Tamila Nadu.Coveting the seat, Srinivas is learnt to be trying to get into the good books of the party high command.Since the 2009 Assembly election the former state Congress chief has tried all means to enter the Assembly or Council but with little success. In the 2010 by-election also he faced serious disappointment by tasting defeat at the hands of BJP’s Y Laxminarayana in his home town of Nizamabad. Now the vacancy in the Council caused by Rosaiah’s resignation has given him another opportunity to become a legislator. After a long silence, Srinivas, who has close relations with Seemandhra leaders, has come out openly in support of the demand for a Telangana state and written to AICC president Sonia Gandhi saying that the time was ripe for taking a decision. The Congress high command has, in recognition of his services, invited Srinivas to Delhi to take part in the consultations. He met all members of the Congress core committee and conveyed his views unambiguously. He decided to prolong his stay in Delhi to meet party leaders in the name of Telangana talks, and presented his perception of the state of things in the region.A section of party leaders is, however, upset over the prominence the high command is giving to Srinivas by involving him in the consultations.“Though there are several pormer PCC presidents hailing from the region such as M Satyanarayana Rao, P Narsar Rddy, K Keshava Rao and V Hanumanth Rao, the high command has erred in inviting only DS,” a senior leader remarked and said they conveyed their feelings to the high command.According to some others, the high command is consulting only those who who will follow its instructions which explains the involvement of Union minister S Jaipal Reddy, the former PCC president and others in the consultation process. It is learnt that many T Congress leaders have not taken kindly to DS’ Delhi visit.Former Assembly speaker KR Suresh Reddy, who went to Delhi on his personal work, also met high command leaders and conveyed his views on the Telangana issue.“The Congress has recognised the seriousness of the situation in Telangana and will take a decision in the coming few days,’’ he told Express
