THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: For the first time in recent years, Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) has taken care to redress the complaints of regional imbalance while selecting the state leadership in the organisational revamp. There had been complaints of regional imbalance resulting from loyalties or lack of it to leaders who matter in the party.Taking a break from this, the organisational revamp this time has made a balancing act in selecting the new leadership. While the state secretary T V Rajesh who is from Kannur district was retained in the post, M Swaraj from Malappuram was elevated to the post of state president. K S Sunilkumar who was Thiruvananthapuram district secretary, has been appointed as treasurer. The revamped state DYFI leadership has witnessed the emergence of M Swaraj as the state president. He had not been in the limelight since he had held the post of state secretary of SFI. His strong loyalty to CPM state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan helped his re-emergence in the DYFI from the post of district secretary in Malappuram, it has been cited. The revamp also witnessed the elevation of A M Shamzeer, another former SFI state secretary and a confidant of Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, as one of the joint secretaries.Asked whether it was a conscious effort to redress the compliant of north-south divide and regional imbalance, T V Rajesh MLA told ‘Express’ that they had always tried to keep the regional balance in tact. “We always take the cadre’s past, present and even future prospects into consideration before selecting a leader for a particular post.We also take care to ensure regional balance as well. But in case of meritorious cadre, we might have taken decisions favoring them even if it meant that a particular district would get more posts,’’ he said. He pointed out that in the case of M B Rajesh and Sreeramakrishnan, despite being the fact both of them were from neighbouring districts of Palakkad and Malappuram, the organisation had counted on their experience, merit and contributions to the organisation. He denied reports of factional loyalty having played a role in the elevation of any leader to a particular post.On the priorities of the new leadership, Rajesh said they would be launching strong agitation against the move to raise the pension age of government employees. Providing legal aid to indigent people by engaging advocates who are well-wishers and members of the DYFI, opening of help desks at the district level to assist candidates seeking government jobs are on the agenda. Steps to mobilise youth against ending communal strife and fight alcoholism will be the other priorities. He said the DYFI would organise workshop for youths on new media at the district level. When pointed out that the newly-elected state president M Swaraj himself was flayed for his pompous marriage ceremony and his bride wearing huge quantity of gold ornaments, Rajesh denied the reports and alleged that it was the media which put Swaraj in poor light. However, he admitted that over 1000 invitees had attended the feast. However, he said that DYFI as a policy had instructed its leaders upto the district level to avoid such pompous marriage ceremonies.
