In a move to further tighten screws on the managements of private engineering colleges, the state government on Tuesday decided to ensure the filling of seats under the B (management quota) category online to prevent any ‘backdoor admission’ by the college managements.
Government sources stated that this will be implemented from the current academic year.
According to sources in the social welfare department, if admission is made online the managements will not be able to collect huge amounts from students seeking admission to the management quota seats.
“Some reputed colleges used to collect fees in lakhs as there was no supervision on how much was being collected from the students,” alleged one government official.
Now, following the Supreme Court directive, the engineering colleges have to follow a uniform fee structure and fee hike will be only for those who have commensurable infrastructure.
“When the government fixed `35,000 as fee for a majority of the colleges, the managements did not utter a word in protest.
This can be considered as an admission by them that they do not qualify for anything more with their available infrastructure,” said another government official.
Earlier, the fee for admission to convener (Group A) seats used to be `31,000 and fees for management seats used to vary depending on the reputation of the college.
Under Group A, 70 per cent of the seats were genuinely filled as convenor quota seats.
