HYDERABAD: The AP Pharma Council (APPC) is all set to crack a whip on unregistered pharmacists in the state. The APPC has issued notices against registered pharmacists who gave their certificates 'on hire' to others in return of their monthly payment, said Annapareddy Vijayabhaskar Reddy, president of the council, here on Sunday. "The registration of pharmacists with fake or borrowed certificates will soon be cancelled," Reddy added.Explaining the poor conditions of APPC and how it denies jobs to aspirants interested in retail pharmacy, he said, the Pharmacy Act of 1948 has provisions against 'hiring' certificates but they are not implemented efficiently. According to him, the act says that prescribed medicines should be provided to patients only by a registered pharmacist. "But, this has not been the case in our state," he opined. Of the 67,000 medical stores across the state, only 10,000 stores are manned by registered pharmacists. In this regard, Reddy assured that severe actions would be taken to ensure that retail pharmacies would be operated by qualified and registered pharmacists only.He added that the objective of the council is to implement the provisions of the Pharmacy Act effectively. "for this, we need support of fellow pharmacists in Andhra Pradesh to uplift the pharmacy sector and bring it on par with advanced countries."
