New Delhi: Men's world No. 1 Roger Federer advanced to the third round of the US Open with an easy win over Chile's Paul Capdeville 6-1, 6-4, 6-4 though second seed Rafael Nadal had to struggle a bit before booking his place in the second round.
"I thought it was pretty good. I had a good start, you know. I controlled rallies from the baseline, I was serving pretty well and.... of course a little bit of a hiccup in the second set, you know, but the game I got broke, I should never have lost the first point. That kind of put me under pressure and.... he played a good game after that. So, it happens, but the reaction was right there, so which was a good thing, and from then on I kind of never looked back, so it was a pretty much a controlled match and it's nice to have a first night session, that's for sure," Roger Federer said about his win.
Nadal was given a tough fight by Alun Jones and though the world No. 2 managed to win the first set, he lost the second set.
But luck was on Nadal's side as the Spaniard finally won in four sets 7-5, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1.
"Well, maybe if I am in another tournament, I (would) never go to the court today. But is the US Open, so is very important tournament for me. I have big illusion for play good this tournament. Well, I hope the knee improves. I have one day, a little bit more than one day. I hope the knee improves," Nadal said about his knee.
Marat Safin, too, had a tough opponent in Frank Dancevic and it took the Russian two hours and 25 minutes to win 7-5, 7-6, 7-6.
"Yes, but who cares? It's so far in the past. It's already history. It's a long time ago. It's time to move on (smiling). I hate the people when they still live in the past and saying how great they were in, I don't know, in the past century. Who cares? I'm not this type of person. I try to move on. I try to improve and forget it. Whatever happened, happened. It was good memories, great. But you don't focus on that because there's so much going on, so many things coming to you," Safin said after the match about his US Open title win in 2000.
And playing in his last Grand Slam before retiring, Tim Henman made a successful start beating 27th seed Dmitry Tursunov of Russia 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
"Yes, I mean, you know, if I had lost in straight sets today, I don't think it would have been the biggest deal in the world. But having said that, yeah, to play against him of all people, having lost to him on four of five occasions, and play that well, it's great. It certainly leaves, yes, sort of leaves a good taste," Tim Henman said.
