MADURAI: The Madurai High Court Bench has posted the final hearing of a petition seeking to restrain Jallikattu from being held in Madurai and Trichy, on Thursday. On Wednesday, a Bench comprising Justice Chitra Venkataraman and Justice R Karuppiah issued directions to additional advocate general K Chellapandian to clarify the reasons behind an impugned communication of the State to the animal welfare board pertaining to Jallikattu and assistant solicitor general M Ravindran to make submissions on a notification passed by the Central government classifying bull as performing animal.Originally, S Radha Rajan, an animal activist from Chennai, filed a PIL to issue directions to the Collectors of Madurai and Tiruchy and the Jallikattu Vizha Committee against conducting Jallikattu and also challenged the impugned communication of the State government. The petition recalled the notification passed by the MoEF on July 11, last year, which included the bull as a performing animal along with the bear, monkey, tiger, panther and lion. It further stated that the State government stated that since no tickets are being sold for the audience, the bulls participating in Jallikattu cannot be considered as being trained or exhibited. Therefore, the department claimed that the notification was no bar to conduct Jallikattu. Following this, the Collectors of Tiruchy and Madurai are said to have given clearance letters for conducting Jallikattu.
