New Delhi: The Government on Monday confirmed the country's first death from the H1N1 flu in Pune, a top official said.
"There has been one death in Pune," Health Secretary Naresh Dayal said, adding that the victim was a 14-year-old girl.
The teenager was admitted to a hospital last month with symptoms of sore throat, runny nose and headaches, a government statement said.
She was put on a ventilator after her condition deteriorated.
"Her condition deteriorated again with multi system involvement and she expired on the evening of 03.08.09," the statement added.
India recorded its first H1N1 case in Hyderabad in May and since then the virus has spread across the country with dozens of cases from Pune city itself, health department officials said.
The H1N1 virus, commonly known as swine flu, emerged in April in the United States and Mexico, and has spread internationally.
The World Health Organisation declared an H1N1 influenza epidemic on June 11. The virus has killed more than 800 people worldwide since emerging in April.
