MADURAI: The Madurai City Police registered a case against five persons, including a gold appraiser working in a cooperative bank here on Tuesday, for pledging fake jewellery for gold loans to the tune of Rs 25 lakh.According to the police, the incident was reported at the Tamil Nadu Co-operative State Agriculture & Rural Development Bank Ltd.Based on a complaint from the bank’s regional manager Gopinath the police registered a case. Loan was released to Govindharajan, of DSP Nagar in Bypass Road, for 2.041.9 grams jewellery he claimed as gold. The total loan dispersed was Rs 25,07,382 during the period between July 16, 2010 and May 17, 2011.Meanwhile, the regional manager, while reviewing the gold jewellery pledged in the bank, found that the jewellery pledged by Govindharajan was below the prescribed standards for issuing gold loans. Following this, he lodged a complaint stating that loans were availed by producing fake jewellery. A case was registered against Govindharajan, Ramasamy, of Krishna Rayar Teppam Road, Srinivasan, of CMR Road, Susila, of DSP Nagar, and Mairiya Jebastin.Man rapes niece; heldA 49-year-old man was arrested on Wednesday for raping his 14-year-old niece at Pettai in Tirunelveli City.The Police said, when the girl was alone at here house on December 22 last year, Nijam Mydeen, the girl’s mother’s brother-in-law (sister’s husband) raped her. After threatening her, he had thereafter, raped the girl again several times. Her mother filed a complaint after she found that the girl was three months pregnant and had undergone abortion.
