Five people, including two children, were killed in rain-related incidents since last evening in Uttar Pradesh where flood-like situation prevailed in several districts. A 7-year-old boy and a man, aged 35, were killed when lightning struck them in Chitrakoot and Sultanpur districts respectively, officials said.
A 12-year-old girl was swept away by the swirling water of the river Ganga in Sahaswan area in Badaun district. A house collapse, triggered by heavy rains, killed two women in Amethi district, the officials said. Floods had affected 134 villages in Lakhimpur and 32 in Sitapur districts, the Relief Commissioner Office said.
River Sharda was flowing above the danger mark at Paliakalan in Lakhimpur district, accordig to the Central Water Commission. Ghaghra too was flowing above the red mark at Elgin bridge in Barabanki, it said, adding it was also rising at Ayodhya.
River Ganga was rising at Fathgarh, Mirzapur, Ballia, Varanasi and Ghazipur. Moderate to heavy rains lashed many places in eastern Uttar Pradesh as the south-west monsoon remained active in the region. A few places in western region of the state also received showers since last evening, the weather office said.
Mirzapur received 11 cms of rains, Dalmau amd Rath 9 each, Kanpur 6, and Turtipar, Dabri, and Raibareilly five cms each, it said. The MeT office has forecast rains or thundershowers at most places in the state in the next couple of days.
