PUDUCHERRY: Not even her limited movements and impaired vision prevented 93-year-old Lagrange from going to the French Consulate in Puducherry to cast her vote in the first round of the French presidential elections on Sunday. Lagrange, resident of Bharathi Street, came in an auto rickshaw with her daughter to perform her duty as a citizen of France. When asked, Lagrange said she did not remember how many times she voted since she came to India. Balakrishnan (60), whose father was a former employee of the French government, was equally duty bound as he waited in queue to vote. Voting began at 8 am.“We consider it our duty,” said Balakrishnan, whose immediate family members are in France. This was the fourth time he exercised his franchise in the French elections. According to top sources of the French Consulate, Puducherry, approximately half of the 5,259 French citizens in the UT and other areas exercised their franchise in the first round of the French presidential elections. The sources said that the details of voting, which closed at 6 pm, would be available after 11.30 pm on Sunday. The front-runners for the election include the President and Union for Popular Movement candidate Nicolas Sarkozy and Socialist Party candidate Francois Hollande.
