It is Shavdatuashvili's first Olympic medal. Shavdatuashvili defeated one of the favorites, Masashi Ebinuma of Japan, in the semifinals with a match-ending ippon.
The bronze medals were won by Masashi Ebinuma of Japan and Cho Jun-ho of South Korea.
