Pakistan Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani said Haqqani was asked to quit in order to conduct a fair trial.

Islamabad: Pakistan Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani has dismissed the "memogate" controversy as a non issue as Mansoor Ijaz, the writer of the document is not a Pakistani, and had no credibility.

While taking to a private news channel, Gilani said Ijaz did not have any credibility and he had even maligned other institutions in the country in his writings.

He was quoted as saying by the state-run APP that the scandal was not an issue as Ijaz is not a Pakistani and had no credibility.

In response to a question, Gilani said when the leader of the opposition raised the issue of the "memogate" in parliament, he told the lawmakers that he will call Pakistan's Ambassador Hussain Haqqani to Islamabad to give explanation to the Pakistani leadership.

He said the then envoy came to Pakistan and explained his position in the presence of President Asif Ali Zardari, Chief of the Army Staff Asfaq Parvez Kayani and Director General of ISI, Lt Gen Shuja Pasha.

Haqqani was forced to resign over the secret memo sent to the US military seeking its help to prevent a possible coup.

Gilani said Haqqani was asked to quit in order to conduct a fair trial and he had referred the matter to the House Committee on National Security.

He appealed to the people to wait for the final decision as the matter is sub-judice before the court and the Parliamentary Committee was working on it.

During the interaction, the Prime Minister responded to various issues pertaining to the country's political situation, President's health, NATO attack, Pak-US relations, the Pakistani news agency said.
