CHENNAI: In a first of its kind in the country, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Thursday launched the Road Accident Investigation System and presented interceptor vehicles fitted with speed laser gun and breath analyser to traffic police personnel. The CM also distributed handheld equipment with GPS connectivity to take photos of the accident spot.The new system is implemented by the Chennai City Police under the Tamil Nadu Urban Development Project Fund at a cost of Rs 3.4 crore. The system and interceptor vehicles are being operated through a private player.The handheld equipment will be able to take photos of the accident spot, while the accident system will help in providing emergency treatment to the injured and sending fire tenders, if necessary, to the spot.With the information received through the GPS equipment, Geographic Information System Interface (GISI) will be created and through this, details of the accident can be marked in the digital map of Chennai City. The new system will also help in the investigation of road accidents and in taking steps for providing legal relief to the affected. The system will be implemented by integrating the procedures to be followed before and after the accidents. It will also be helpful to the State Transport Planning Department.Besides, the State has bought interceptor vehicles, which will be useful in checking overspeeding, resulting in potential accidents, and in curbing drunken driving.
