THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Cooperation Minister C N Balakrishnan has said that the government will take corrective steps in the CPM-controlled cooperative self-financing Pariyaram Medical College on the basis of the committee report that has been set up to look into the functioning of the college.The minister told reporters here on Tuesday that the Cabinet sub-committee would look into admissions and quota in the college. The committee has been asked to examine the functioning of the college in the past five years.The minister said that he would not disband governing bodies of district or state cooperative banks purely on political reasons. However, the governing council of banks found malfunctioning will be disbanded, he said.The minister said that the State Government had sought Rs 100 crore assistance from the Union Government for expanding retail outlets run by the Consumerfed.The state will hold discussions with Union Minister of State for Food and Civil Supplies K V Thomas on the proposals in this regard. He also announced the plan to open more medical outlets and ‘Triveni’ retail shops under the Consumerfed.Godowns will be set up to store medicines in all the 14 districts to solve the shortage of medicines in ‘Neethi Medical Stores.’ An amount of Rs 200 crore was due from the State Government to the cooperative sector on account of market intervention carried out in the past few years, he said.
