KOCHI: The PWD will soon start the road work for Rs1,343 crore allotted by the Finance Department, said Public Works Minister V K Ebrahim Kunju. After a review meeting of the top officials of PWD here on Tuesday, the minister said the Urban Development Project under the Road Fund Board would be extended to Kannur, Malappuram, Thrissur and Kottayam also. The minister said that the PWD has got the administrative sanction to renovate 45 rest houses across the state by spending `6.75 crore. Also, the department has chosen eight buildings which will be preserved as heritage monuments in the first phase. The buildings chosen in the first phase are Thiruvananthapuram Arts College building, Kerala Palace Kuttalam, Town Hall Thrissur, Fort Kochi Rest House, North Paravoor Court Complex, Ernakulam Law College Assembly Hall, Koyilandi Court Complex and the Kozhikode Chief Judicial Magistrate Court. The Urban Development Project in Thiruvananthapuram will be completed in March. Similar projects would be implemented in Kochi and Kozhikode. The first phase land acquisition has almost been completed in Kozhikode where construction will begin by the middle of 2012. The PWD has received the approval of the state Cabinet to take over the work of 8,570 km of grama panchayat and district panchayat roads across the state. The government notification in this regard would be made within two or three days. The minister said that e-tendering, which has already been implemented in Thiruvananthapuram, will be extended across the state. E-payment will also be introduced, he said. So far the department has got sanction for `177.8 crore from NABARD for 31 rural roads and two bridges.
