New Delhi: The Civil Aviation Ministry has demanded an explanation from airlines on proposed airfares submitted by them.
Acting on a government directive, domestic airlines on Wednesday submitted their proposals for making public a range of fares for every month.
The Civil Aviation ministry had ordered the airlines to declare highest and lowest fares on different routes the airlines.
Sources in the Civil Aviation Ministry say the regulator is very angry with the response of private airlines.
A trip from Delhi to Bangalore could cost 40,000 rupees and a trip next door to Chandigarh as much as 14,000 rupees.
A one way trip from Delhi to Cochin even on a low cost airline can like Spicejet and Jetlite will cost over 20,000 rupees.
Many passengers and MPs from far flung areas like the Andaman and Nicobar islands have been continuously writing to the Civil Aviation minister about the high fares.
The government is planning to call airlines and ask them to justify such high fares.
But airline sources say that the DGCA is toothless and beyong asking airlines to justify fares as per rule 135 of the Aircraft rules they really cannot fix any fares.
