Former prime minister and JD(S) national president H D Deve Gowda urged the Union government to convene an all-party meet to discuss the prevailing violence in Assam.
He was speaking after unfurling the national flag at the party office on the occasion of Independence Day here on Wednesday.
Gowda said that a meeting preferably chaired by Congress president Sonia Gandhi and BJP leader L K Advani was required to find a lasting solution for the problem in Assam.
“There is a need to end the mindless violence in Assam and no party should indulge in taking political mileage out of it,” said Gowda.
Describing the prevailing drought in the state as serious, the JD(S) leader urged the state government to give priority to relief works.
Meanwhile, the Opposition Congress leader in Karnataka Assembly Siddaramaiah has slammed the ruling BJP for the delay in filling the vacant posts in the Karnataka Lokayukta.
Speaking after unfurling the national tricolour at the KPCC office here, Siddaramaiah alleged that the state government is not inclined to fill the post in order to protect some of its tainted ministers and leaders who are facing corruption charges.
He also alleged that the law and order situation in the state is poor as antisocial elements are gaining the upper hand and operating without any fear . “We have to free Karnataka from the misrule of the BJP,” he said.
KPCC president Dr G Parameshwar who also spoke on the occasion, said that people would teach a bitter lesson to the corruption-ridden BJP in the next elections.
