Guv’s son clears DNA test in rape case
Punjab MLA Gaganjit Singh is accused of raping his maid in his legislator’s apartment on August 12.

Chandigarh: A DNA test in a rape case allegedly involving Akali Dal legislator Gaganjit Singh has proved negative, giving a new twist to the episode.

The report of the Central Forensic Sciences Laboratory (CFSL) here says no traces of Gaganjit 's semen were found in the samples sent for testing, police sources said Friday.

Gaganjit, son of Tamil Nadu Governor and former Punjab chief minister Surjit Singh Barnala, was arrested by Chandigarh Police on August 12 after a 55-year-old maid working in his legislator's apartment alleged he had raped her.

Gaganjit, a Shiromani Akali Dal legislator from Dhuri in Punjab, is in prison after the police registered a case against him.

However, officials investigating the case said the DNA test report was not conclusive and that they had enough evidence against Gaganjit.

Supporters of the legislator said the report proved their claim he was "framed" by vested interests.

His father had met his Punjab counterpart General (retd) S F Rodrigues last month seeking a fair probe into the matter.

Doctors at the hospital here where the victim was first brought after the alleged rape, said the DNA report could not provide conclusive evidence of the crime.
