TIRUCHY: BJP MP Hemamalini’s letter to Jairam Ramesh, Union Minister for Environment and Forests, seeking a ban on jallikattu, has drawn flak from BJP’s Tiruchy president Partheeban here, who participated in a protest condemning the former actress for her stand.Participating in a protest organised by the Tamil Nadu Jallikattu Forum, the BJP district leader, who is also the treasurer of the forum, accused Hemamalini of taking up the jallikattu issue for cheap publicity, when there were numerous issues concerning the welfare of people that needs to be addressed.Strongly denying her charge that the bulls were kicked and dragged to the ground, Partheeban said such allegations were raised by people who did not know what the sport was. Those who send their bulls for participation treat them like their children and accusations of ill-treating the animals were false, Partheeban said. The sport was now being organised as per Supreme Court guidelines and there was no chance of injury to the audience now. The casualties for the players too had been totally averted.Partheeban said jallikattu was part of Tamil culture and tradition and was close to the hearts of the people in the State, especially those in rural areas.
