Narendra Modi, the 63-year-old man who is behind the BJP's astonishing victory in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, will take oath as the 15th Prime Minister of India on Monday. The much awaited swearing-in ceremony, administered by President Pranab Mukherjee, is scheduled to take place at 6:00 pm in the forecourt of the Rashtrapati Bhawan in Delhi.
Nearly 3,500 Indian and over 2,000 foreign dignitaries will witness the open-air oath ceremony of the new Prime Minister of India. Prime Minister of Pakistan Nawaz Sharif and President of Sri Lanka Mahinda Rajapaksa will also attend the ceremony.
To get a fair view of what nation expects from the new PM, News18 took the views of people belonging to various states of the country on what they anticipate from the new government and about their vision on how their state and India can achieve greater heights.
"Now, that Narendra Modi will be the PM, I expect him to deliver whatever he has promised and not involve in any religious or communal intentions while doing so", says Aishani Gupta who is a journalism student and hails from Delhi. "He is very capable as a leader only if he behaves and keeps aside his religious inclinations," she added.
Another resident of Delhi Dhriti Dixit who is a research executive says, "Narendra Modi is a disciplined leader who has raised aspirations of common pople, he is going to deliver what people expect from him. He is capable of handling autocracy in a democratic way."
Divyang Sharma, who belongs to Uttar Pradesh's Agra and is greatly concerned about the increasing crime rate in the state, said, "I am an avid reader and never miss on any newspaper. These days, I only come across crime news, out of which, unfortunately, 50 per cent belong to my state. I know this is really bad and I expect Modi government to take steps in this regard."
While shifting our focus to another state of India - Rajasthan, we had an e-mail conversation with Abhijeet Sharma who is an engineer with a leading company in Gurgaon. According to him, inflation is the most common problem that each strata of the society faces today and he is adamant on seeing how Narendra Modi deals with it. "People of my state need more job opportunities and good infrastructure," he further.
"I really want Narendra Modi to apply Gujarat's development model in Uttarakhand. Here in the state, we have to fight against shortage of drinking water on a daily basis; it would be great if the inter-linking project of rivers is completed at a faster rate.," says Kartikey Joshi who stays in Dehradun. He also hopes that Modi government will multiply the manufacturing capacity of India which would help in higher employment, development and also in increasing the GDP of the nation.
Snigdha Verma, a resident of Madhya Pradesh's Bhopal, believes that her state really needs to be developed in terms of infrastructure. She even hopes for the construction of the metro rail in major cities so that commuting becomes easier.
A resident of Bihar, Amit Pandey, said that his state has to deal with floods in monsoon season which has been a grave problem for the state since many years. "I want Modiji to work to connect the rivers of the state which, in a way or the other, will ward off the flood like situation from the state and will also help the farmers in their agricultural needs. It will also be good enough if he clears the special status for Bihar," he claims.
Heading towards South India, Andhra Pradesh's capital Hyderabad faces power problems. Anil Khatri, a resident says, "I see Narendra Modi as a family member. Here, in our state, we suffer with irregular and unscheduled power cuts that make our life vulnerable. I feel Modiji will look after his people like one cares about his own family."
