Srinagar: The hardline faction of the Hurriyat Conference led by Syed Ali Shah Geelani on Saturday rejected the Centre's invitation to attend the two-day roundtable on the Kashmir issue to be held next week.
"An invitation signed by Special Secretary G S Rajagopal of the Union Home Ministry was delivered to me on Saturday morning, inviting me to the roundtable conference, but since we the conference a futile exercise we have rejected the invitation," Geelani said.
Geelani claimed many such conferences have been held so far to resolve the Kashmir issue but no breakthrough had been achieved because India has not accepted Jammu and Kashmir as a dispute.
He said the only peaceful solution to the Kashmir issue lay in implementing the UN resolutions.
However, he said there was a provision in the Hurriyat constitution for finding a solution to the Kashmir issue through talks but the dialogue should be a tripartite one involving India, Pakistan and representatives of the people of Kashmir.
Such talks would be held only to chalk out modalities for implementing the UN resolutions, he added.
He reiterated his stand that he would not hold with the Centre till it withdrew its troops, revoked black laws and released all detenues.
