Kanpur: A condolence meeting was held on Monday at IIT-Kanpur in memory of their former student Abhijit Mahato, who was killed in the US last Friday.
Students and staff of the institution paid homage to the deceased alumnus during the prayer meeting.
"Abhijit was one of the bright students of the institution. He passed M.Tech examination with hundred percent marks in 2004 and got various awards," said V Satyamurthy Assistant Registrar of IIT-K.
A message by the institution on the death of its former student will also be sent to his parents, he said.
He also voiced the concern of IIT-K over the safety of Indian students in the US.
Abhijeet Mahato (29), who was doing his Ph.D on computational mechanics at the Dukes Pratt School of Engineering in Durham in North Carolina, was found dead in his apartment by his friends and colleagues.
This is the second incident in five weeks in America where Indian students became victims.
