CHENNAI: The irony was missed by none on Sunday when the city's quiz whizzes could identify popular MAD magazine series when its founder William Maxwell Gaines was mentioned, or translate ‘I Put Together’ in Latin as LEGO, but they were stumped when they were asked to expand JRD Tata. And this was at the Chennai regional round of the Crucible Campus Quiz 2012, organised by Tata! But the quiz only got better from there on, as the contestants, who are no-doubt front benchers in their colleges, hit on the buzzers like their lives were on stake, to answer some of the most difficult questions thrown at them. After qualifying for the finals from the wildcard round, the team from IIT-Madras walked away a winner of the regional round with cash prize of Rs 75,000. Shivraj Singh Negi and Vishnu MJ edged out runners up, Tejdeep and Varshasri, from SV College of Engineering, by 45 points, with a total score of 60 points. The second prize winners took home Rs 35,000. Though the boys from IIT maintained a constant lead, the duo from SV College of Engineering put up a good fight and kept them on their toes. However, it was the IIT boys’ ability to put things together and come up with spontaneous answers that took them to the victory podium. Incidentally, both winning colleges were winners of their respective wildcard rounds and they came out tops, beating other direct finalists that included College of Engineering, Guindy, Jerusalem College of Engineering, IFMR and Great Lakes Institute of Management. Chief Guest for the day was K Ananth Krishnan, Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, TCS. The team from IIT will battle it out with finalists from other states at the national finals in Mumbai on April 8. On a side note, it was revealed through the quiz that Chief Minister Jayalalitha was the first Lux model from Tamil Nadu! Now, who would’ve guessed that!
