The Pallikal village in Thiruvananthapuram in the state of Kerala is known for its organic market. Local18 reports that after the commencement of the market, it gained considerable popularity across the state. Let us delve into what the market has to offer and how they cultivate organic veggies.
As per the report by Local18, in 2016 the government started a scheme, which aimed to promote organic farming and Polyhouse farming in the area. It was done to increase awareness of the benefits of a healthy diet and why fertiliser-free products are better for consumption.
So, this market was started as an experimental project in the village of Pallikal, scheduled to open on just one Saturday, every month. According to reports, it was looked after by the farmers’ group and Pallikkal Gram Panchayat. The market started to gain momentum and popularity among the locals, who wanted it to open at least once a week. Heeding the demand, the market was set up every Saturday of the week. On the third Saturday, the market is organised by Kudumbashree members.
Due to the immense popularity of organic food items, another decision was made to schedule it every Wednesday as well. The Wednesday market is handled by the Gram Panchayat itself. Local 18 states further that the authorities are trying their best to avail more resources, according to the needs of the locals.
Reportedly, the customers had just one complaint with the organisers that the vegetables were sold out in minutes. So, a timing change was carried out by the authorities, to cater to every customer waiting. There are several reasons this market proved to be a success. First, the consumers opt for quality, fertiliser-free products. It is a great platform for local farmers to sell their products directly to the people.
