New Delhi: A most-wanted Indian Mujahideen terrorist, one of the two men who escaped during the 2008 Batla House encounter, has been arrested by Delhi Police’s Special Cell.

DCP Special Cell, Pramod Singh said, “He was one of the main conspirators of Indian Mujahideen and there were plans of reviving the organisation along with SIMI.”

Police sources said, Ariz Khan alias Junaid was arrested from Nepal. Junaid is believed to be involved in several blasts in Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi. He was brought to Delhi four days ago after being arrested from near the Nepal border.

“Junaid was wanted in many cases of bombings all over the country. He was involved in the Karol Bagh, Connaught Place and Greater Kailash blasts in Delhi. He was still living in India for one month after the Batla House blasts. He was also wanted in the 2007 UP blasts, 2008 Jaipur serial blasts, 2008 Ahmedabad blasts and had later escaped the Batla House encounter,” Singh said.

He added, “Junaid was involved in blasts that killed a total of 165 people and left 535 injured.”

The 32-year-old was present at Batla House, along with four others, and had managed to give police the slip during the encounter on September 19, 2008, in Delhi's Jamia Nagar, in which two Indian Mujahideen terrorists were killed.

Junaid escaped with an accomplice Shehzad who was later arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment by a trial court. His appeal against the trial court's verdict has been pending in the high court.

Encounter specialist and Inspector Mohan Chand Sharma, who led the police action, was also killed during the 2008 operation.

Singh said on Wednesday, “Junaid had reward money of Rs 20 lakh on his head. He is an expert bomb maker and the main conspirator of Indian Mujahideen.”
