Jaishankar made foreign secretary as a reward for Obama's visit to India on Republic Day, say sources
"He (Jaishankar) convinced the White House for Obama's visit to India on Republic Day," sources said.

New Delhi: Indian Ambassador to the US, S Jaishankar, has been appointed as the new Foreign Secretary. He replaces Sujatha Singh who has resigned with immediate effect.

Sources said Jaishankar has been rewarded for US President Barack Obama's visit to India. "He convinced the White House for Obama's visit to India on Republic Day," the sources said.

Jaishankar will get two years' term. He was due to retire on January 30.

Sujatha Singh's tenure has been curtailed with immediate effect. She has resigned.

Commenting on the development, former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah tweeted: "If the reports about Indian Ambassador to US Jaishankar being appointed Foreign Secretary are correct it's an excellent decision."
