Haryana: All Jat Khaps will be meeting for a mahapachayat on Friday in Jind and the main agenda would be to discuss reservation for their community. However, the meeting also comes under the backdrop of over 20 rapes cases in just 40 days in Haryana and widespread criticism over the Khap's bizarre statements.
On October 13, Haryana's Sarva Khap Jat Panchayat, which has been at the forefront of demanding reservations for Jats in government jobs, discussed that the marriage age for girls be lowered to curb rising incidents of rape in the state. Sube Singh had hit the national headlines last week with his suggestion that lowering the marriage age for women would prevent rape. He found backing from Indian National Lok Dal leader and former Haryana chief minister Om Prakash Chautala who said, "I am with the khaps on this issue. This will protect women." Also on the agenda on Saturday, besides age and reservations for Jats, is the rising incident of heinous crimes in Haryana.
When asked why rapes are occuring at this scale in Haryana, Sube Singh said that movies and television are to be blamed for rapes. "I believe this is happening because our youth are being badly influenced by cinema and television. I think that girls should be married at the age of 16, so that they have their husbands for their sexual needs, and they don't need to go elsewhere. This way rapes will not occur," commented Singh.
