Finally days after reports of alleged gang rapes in Haryana's Murthal during the violent agitation by the Jats, who have been demanding reservation under the OBC category, a Delhi woman lodged a police complaint against seven men including her family members for the crime.
Sources said as per her statement she was traveling in a car when she was dragged out by a group of seven men and gang raped near Murthal. According to the complainant, the alleged perpetrators included some members of her family too.
Speaking to CNN-IBN, Haryana DIG, Crime, Sonipat, Dr. Rajshree Singh said, "This is the first case which has come to our knowledge. It could be a family dispute too. Seven people have been named in the FIR."
She said, "I cannot clarify whether this was done by the Jat agitators or not. We are investigating the matter and cannot disclose much in to the matter as this could hamper our probe."
CCTV footage accessed by CNN-IBN showed the terror unleashed by Jat protestors at Murthal where travelers were seen trying to escape the violent mob. It also shows two witnesses claiming about assault on women.
Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar on Sunday asked people to share information, if they have any, with the state police regarding the alleged incident of sexual assault of women near Murthal in Sonepat during the Jat quota agitation.
"Those people who possess any information (regarding Murthal incident) must come forward and share it with the police. But we do not understand why the information is not being shared with the police by people (if they have)," Khattar said when asked that some witnesses have appeared in a section of media who had information about the Murthal incident.
A three-member committee of women police officers has been constituted to receive complaints regarding alleged rape of women at Murthal during the Jat stir.
The women police officers team led by DIG Dr Rajshree Singh and two women DSPs, Bharti Dabas and Surinder Kaur, visited the site to gather first hand information about the alleged incident, over 50 km from Delhi.
Asked about recovery of some clothes belonging to women at Murthal on the Delhi Ambala National Highway, Rajshree had said, "These had been sent to Forensic Science Laboratory for examination".
"Let us see, what comes out," she said in Murthal.
She also appealed to all citizens to come forward if they have any clue about the crime. "They should meet us and tell us whatever they have seen, they should share with us all details and we will try to bring out the truth," she said.
On February 26, the Haryana government condemned the incident – if it happened at all – and promised to take stern action if any specific complaint on alleged sexual assault on women during Jat agitation came to light.
