CHENNAI: Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Saturday requested Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to convene a meeting of the Cauvery River Authority (CRA) immediately to finalise the Distress Sharing Formula with Karnataka for sharing Cauvery water during the crucial months and the need for making Karnataka furnish year-wise details of the area under irrigation. The CM said she was expecting a positive response in this matter. The CM, in her letter to the PM, pointed out that the Karnataka government had not been ensuring the flow in Cauvery as per monthly pattern prescribed in the Interim Order in force or as per the Final Order dated February 5, 2007 of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal, in the crucial months of June to September. The CM also brought to the notice of the PM that Karnataka had been unjustly utilising the water for summer irrigation from February to May, depleting the storage in its four major reservoirs. The combined gross storage in the four major reservoirs of Karnataka stood at 58.5 tmcft on February 1, 2012 had come down to 28.176 tmcft on May 14.  Thus, Karnataka had depleted a storage of about 30.33 tmcft from February 1 to May 14.
