The Kutiyattam Kendra will stage Jatayuvadhankam Kutiyattam in the city on October 3.
The Kutiyattam is featured in the famed eighth century text ‘Ascharyachoodamani’ written by Saktibhadra.
The fourth act of the play, ‘Jayatuvadhankam’ is illustrative with the presentation of the famous soka ‘Naham bandhuragatri…’ by Ravana and depicts the plight of Sita and the great bird Jatayu.
The pathos of the text is derived from the sad state of Jatayu whose wings are cut off by Ravana. The divine bird, long time friend and ally of Dasaratha, is blessed by Sita that it will die only after Rama visits the spot and it is able to recount the tale to him.
Kalamandalam Jishnu Pratap will don the role of Jatayu, while Kalamandalam Neetu and Sangeeth Chakyar will play the roles of Ravana and Sita respectively. Kalamandalam Dhanarajan, Ratheesh Bhas and Saji Kumar will accompany on the Mizhavu; Prasanthi and Aiswarya on Thalam; Venumohan on Idakka. Chutti will be done by Kalanilayam Sankara Narayanan.
The event is part of the ‘Kalapaithrika Aswadanam’ programma and is the sixth bi-monthly staging of Kutiyattam in the city.
