VELLORE: Two houses were reportedly burgled of gold and jewellery in the district during the weekend. Sekar (49), a railway employee residing at Katpadi, was away on a family vacation in Hosur since June 1. Upon returning on Saturday, they found the back door forced open and the bureau ransacked. Five sovereigns of jewellery were reported missing. A complaint was filed with Katpadi Police. In another incident, burglars, while robbing a house in Arcot, nearly got caught when they sought to remove the gold chain from the neck of Suguna, wife of 44-year-old Babu. The couple and their children were asleep, around 1 am on Sunday when the house was looted. After Suguna raised an alarm, her husband attempted to capture the men but they made their escape. Eleven sovereigns of gold were reported missing along with `1.25 lakh in cash. Woman Cheated of `1 lakh on Promise of JobMuniraj (41), an employee in the Co-operative Sugar Mill in Tirupattur, was charged on Saturday with cheating Ammu (25), wife of Selvam of Yelagiri, of `1 lakh after promising to secure a job for her. When the couple asked him to return the money, Muniraj allegedly refused. Later, he is said to have disappeared with the money, cutting all contact with her. Based on her complaint with the Jolarpet police, a case has been registered.Ex-Councillor dies in car-van collisionV R Karthikeyan (71), a former councillor from Gudiyattam, was killed on Sunday in a car-van collision. Karthikeyan and his wife Vanaja (56) were on the way to visit their son in Bangalore, when a van heading towards Gudiyattam collided with their car near Kakkathoppu village. Both were critically injured and were taken to the Gudiyattam Government Hospital and then to the Vellore GH. However, he died on the way. Gudiyattam Taluk police have registered the accident and are on the look-out for the van driver Vinoth Kumar.
